Advent: What are you waiting for?
What are you waiting for this Advent? Maybe you're waiting for your parents to get back together, or to pass the MCAS, or for someone special to ask you out...maybe you're waiting to hear from your first choice college....or to get that job you applied for....maybe you're just waiting to have enough money to buy Christmas presents...or pay this month's bills.... or for the war to be over finally, and for our troops to come home safe and sound...Maybe you're waiting for a call or email from someone you haven't heard from in a while....or for someone to say that they are sorry....
Waiting is hard work, isn't it? But that is what this season of Advent is all about: WAITING....Waiting for Christ to come at the end of time, and when He does, to make sense out of this crazy world we live in. Waiting for Christ to come to us today: in the Eucharist, in our prayer, and though the world we live in: the lady on the street, the man who drives the bus, the guy we work with, the beggar on the corner. Waiting for Christmas, and hoping that this year, it might bring us healing and peace-in the Church in Boston, in Bethlehem which is again in the midst of war and violence, in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq, in our families and homes, and in our own hearts....
But while we wait for a better world, we work for it too...We work for peace, we work for justice, we work for healing....Sharing what we have with those who don't have enough to eat, no coat for the winter, no home to go to....Bringing joy and forgiveness, a smile, a laugh...Preparing the stable for the Christ Child to be born...
Come Lord Jesus...come quickly!
